I enjoyed the article by Carol Sulcoski. This gave me a new perspective on choosing yarns for a project.
High Note
Baked Sweet Potato
Cover a baking sheet with non-stick aluminum foil (I use Reynold's Brand). Otherwise you will have a lot of sticky goo to clean off your pan. If you don't mind that, just oil the pan a little. Wash whole potatoes and brush with olive oil. Bake in 350 to 375 degree oven until potatoes start to ooze (about 1.5 hours). Then they are done. Even the skins taste good! And they are good for you, too! Serve with a big lettuce salad for a great, healthful meal.
Star of Bethlehem
I tell a story about my war on the Star of Bethlehem in the garden at our old house. Do not plant this bulb. It is so invasive! My friend Joan played a little joke on me.

ReplyDeleteI am one of those people who think ponchos are always "in", but it probably depends on the style. The owners of our LYS believe firmly that ponchos shouldn't be worn by anyone over the age of 10, but I disagree. :)

ReplyDeleteMy mother was, among other things, a flower arranger. She used a lot of Star of Bethlehem for bride's bouquets. It was beautiful. But she always referred to it as "S.O.B." which sounds like an appropriate name. hutchart (ravelry)

I'm with Chris on the subject of ponchos, they are always in. That said, it might be wise not to make them "loud and garish" but rather "colorful and stylish". I have a nice warm burgundy one that I made for myself by holding a strand of worsted merino with a strand of a worsted alpac/silk blend. It is my "air-travel" poncho and goes on every trip I take from or to a cool clime. I find that the poncho is easy to use with shoulder bags and stays on as I rush from gate to gate. ReplyDeleteI love your comments about shawls and other knits. Ponchos are something I will never wear. I grew up in the 60's and I had to wear the ponchos that my grandmothers made. They were knitted well, but-well, you know-I was MADE to wear them.

i just listened to the episode. i would like to say i crocheted a pink fun fur poncho and i love it and wear it everywhere. i really dont care what people think. i love it and its really warm. most people touch me because they want to pet the poncho :). i think we should make and wear what makes us feel good.

I'm not sure about a poncho. I have flashbacks to a harvest gold/avocado green crochet poncho an Aunt made for me in the early 70's. On the other hand, the WestKnits giveaway would be a great way to start the new year.

Listening for the first time. One of my favorite finished projects is a Daybreak by S. West. You can see it here: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/BlueMoonArtistry/daybreak I was thrilled when my son, who I originally knit it for confessed that he would prefer a more earth-toned scarf...so I got to keep it for myself! Paula, you know I run behind and I didn't listen to this (great!) podcast until this past Monday, first day back at work and faced a mountain of year-end work and many deadlines. Was tired and downcast as I began my walk. Between the Star of Bethlehem story and the Vogue photo styling descriptions, I was laughing aloud as I walked. Thank you for yet another fabulous podcast.
