Nature Notes
We’re still having quite cold nights here in central
Illinois. It’s been in the 30’s most nights, a little warmer last night
perhaps. Sometimes it has been so cold that the spring peepers don’t even peep
or we just here a few rather frigid squawks. The woods is as beautiful as you
will see it carpeted with spring beauties, sweet William, and May apples. These
spring flowers rely on the energy stored in their underground bulbs or corms to
make a quick appearance and do their best to reproduce before the leaves on the
trees block out much of the sun’s rays. They get the job done quickly and begin
storing up energy for this time next year.
A cool spring does not delay bird migration in the least. As
I sit here I am watching a male goldfinch at the niger feeder. His plumage is
still a little spotty from winter moulting. At the platform feeder a pair of
tufted titmice are taking turns flying to the feeder, getting a sunflower seed,
and then flying to a nearby branch to crack the seed and eat it. Our hummingbirds
are back too. Bob put the nectar feeder our on Monday and on Tuesday I saw the
first hummer. Since then there have been quite a few.
I kept a list of all the birds I have seen from the porch
the past few days. In order of appearance:
Chipping Sparrow singing his little heart out. |
Chipping Sparrow |
Pileated woodpecker, Barred Owl, White-crowned sparrow,
Flicker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, White breasted Nuthatch, Chipping Sparrow,
Downy Woodpecker, Blue Jay, Cardinal, Mourning Dove, White throated Sparrow,
Tufted Titmouse, Black Capped Chickadee, Goldfinch, Cowbird, Robin, Purple Finch
and House finch, Indigo Bunting, and Ruby-throated hummingbird. I have heard
the song of the White-throated sparrow once and keep listening for more as it
is one of my favorite bird songs, possibly because it is one of the first I
learned.
Our nature quote is from an American poet, a woman, Karle

The Blethering Room
- Sock tip that I shared at retreat may seem obvious to veteran sock knitters. Self striping…getting socks to match.
- Packing tip from Juniper Grace…use vacuum bags for yarn. (I bought some at Aldi).

I made a hat and THEN I went to the Click for Babies site…I
should have done that first.
Hat should be 50% purple so for boys you can add orange,
gray, or other colors to tone down the purple and make it more acceptable for
boys.

Pebble
Beach KAL with Curious Handmade.
Helen Stewart , also known as Curious Handmade is re-releasing her Pebble Beach Shawlette
and to celebrate we are hosting a Knitting Pipeline KAL of her designs.
The rules are very open. You may use any project knit from one of Helen’s patterns for this KAL. You may participate with projects already completed or in process before the start of the KAL, in addition to new projects. Please consider knitting the re-released Pebble Beach, but any of her patterns qualifies. The KAL will run from May 5 through July 5.
Helen has generously provided a coupon code for a discount of 30% off of any ONE item for use with any of her patterns from May 5 through May 31. The discount code is KPKAL30
We will have 2 KAL threads on the KP Board, one for general KAL chatter and one for photos of Finished Objects, with no chatter. Please remember to post pictures of your finished objects in both threads, so Pipeliners can compliment projects, and not run afoul of the “no-chatter” considerations in the FO thread. Each FO should have its own project and picture post in the FO thread; this means that multiple entries are allowed per person. Please tag your project PebblebeachKAL, and use social media #pebblebeachKAL. The more the merrier!
There will be several prizes awarded, including this skein of Lace Merino from The Uncommon Thread
and other items to be announced later. The winners will be determined by the
Random Number Generator (RNG) method of post numbers in the FO thread. (This is
why we can’t have chatter in the FO thread.)
Please join the fun and help us celebrate Helen’s designs.
Thank you for spending time with me today. Thank you to sponsor
Quince & Co and thank you to Craftsy
for the opportunity to be an affiliate.
